Allow Students to Access Quiz Answers
Scenario: You have offered a quiz and set it to close on a certain date. Once the quiz has closed you want to make the answers available to students who took the quiz and also be sure that those who didn't take the quiz can't access it (or the answers).
Quick Summary of how to do this:
- Give the quiz an end date (found in the Access section of the quiz settings) and set the Review Settings (Review section of the quiz settings) so students won't get the answers
- Then set an action on the quiz so that upon submission of the quiz a password is added to their profile, unlocking any present or future content locked with that password.
- Once the quiz end date passes, use the same password to protect the quiz from students who haven't taken the test.
- Change the Review Settings to allow students to view the answers.
- Then remove the end date so that students who have taken the test can get in.
IMPORTANT:Before following the steps below you'll want to make sure you've gone into the advanced settings on your quiz and set your "Review" options properly.
Set Up
The following section outlines the steps required to allow students who have taken the quiz to see their answers while locking out the students who haven't.
- Create your passwords
First thing you'll want to do is to come up with a separate password for each quiz you intend to offer. It's probably helpful to record these somewhere that you won't lose them because you'll need them in the future. - Open the Action Editor
- Open the quiz you want to set up.
- Click the Settings link at the top of the page to change the Quiz Settings
- Make sure you are in Advanced mode, there are buttons at the top of the page to change between normal and advanced modes
- Scroll down and click the the Action Editor link. It is next to the Actions section, below the textbox. (see image below)
- Create your new action
Once the Action editor pops up, press New and then click the Unlock option from the list offered. - Enter your password
for this quiz in the first Passwords line, and choose when to process the action. The default is submit, which will process it when the student turns in their test. - Save New Action Settings
Once done press the Save button in the lower left hand corner, - Save Actions
then when it takes you back to the list of your actions make sure yours is listed and then press the Save button in the upper right hand corner.

- Save Quiz Changes
Now you'll be back at your advanced options. You might want to take this time to set a close date for your quiz. Then press the Save button at the bottom of the page.
Now that you've set up your quiz you can wait until after the due date/time before doing anything more. When a student takes the quiz right now, the password that you provided will be added to their profile. They will be able to access any items that have been protected with that password. This is important to know, as it has implications for any other content you password protect with the same password. Please make sure that you give each quiz a unique password to prevent unwanted access to other items. Note that even students who have the password can't see the answers because the Feedback settings don't allow it yet.
When you complete the steps below after the quiz has ended you will be opening the quiz back up, but will be preventing those who did not complete it from entering the quiz. Because the password is stored in the student's profile ANGEL automatically, the student never see the password and there is no possibility of a student learning the password and sharing with those students who never took the quiz the first time it was open.
Follow the steps below to reopen and password protect the quiz.
- Once the quiz has closed, go into the Quiz Settings using the Settings link at the top of the page and scroll down to the Password field. Get out the list of passwords that you made and enter the password for this quiz into the box provided, then press Save
- Now you'll want to go into the Advanced settings and remove the quiz end date. You can just uncheck the box on left of the End Date, or you can set another end date farther in the future.
- Change the Review Settings.
- Make sure to save this so you don't lose your changes.
Congratulations! You've now set up your quiz so that students who have taken it will be able to review their quiz, and those who have not taken it will be prompted for a password if they try to access the quiz.
